The Eye and The Ear

The hearing ear and the seeing eye, the Lord hath made even both of them.

—Proverbs XX:12

Laboratory Exercise on The Ear

In these two exercises we'll look at two of the most complex organs, both of which are outstanding examples of how structure and function are really the same thing, two sides of the coin.

Sight and hearing are two of the five senses common to most mammals, and in some species they are far and away the most important means of gaining information about the environment. Both are most useful at long range. This is especially true of the sense of sight; animals with good vision can detect predators or prey at very long distances. Those animals with an acute sense of hearing can also count on "early warning" of danger if the predator makes recognizable noise.
